This could still turn out to be some kind of hoax, but it appears that prominent male feminist Hugo Schwyzer went off his meds after his recent public shaming and
desperate cry for attention ”suicide attempt,” and then had a massive confessional Twitter meltdown.
(See below for the complete PDF.)
For years, Schwyzer has successfully marketed himself as a male feminist, expert on masculinity, and — lately — a scholar of porn. He’s taught college students history and gender studies at Pasadena City College since 1993. According to his own official bio, Schwyzer:
… has served as a facilitator, workshop leader, and speaker on issues revolving around sexuality, masculinity, and transforming self-image. He has presented workshops on body image, sexual harassment, overcoming perfectionism, and the “myth of male weakness” at institutions as diverse as Fuller Theological Seminary and Brown University. He is also a frequent guest on nationally syndicated radio programs and has appeared on CNN, the BBC, CTV, Current TV, the Young Turks and the Ricki Lake Show as an expert on body image, sexuality and gender justice. Hugo provided expert commentary for the National Geographic’sTaboo program during the 2012-13 season. He has been profiled in New York Magazine, The Atlantic, and Bitch.
A former weekly columnist at the Good Men Project and Jezebel, Hugo is now a regular contributor to Daily Life (Australia) and The Atlantic. Among other sites, his articles have appeared in the Guardian, the Los Angeles Times, Relevant, the Huffington Post, The Times of Israel, Alternet, Role/Reboot, Mamamia, XoJane, Modern Mom, Jewrotica, and The Frisky. His essays are featured in the anthologies Men Speak Out and Best Sex Writing 2012.
While many feminists eventually took issue with Schwyzer and he became a figure of some controversy within the feminist community, he was clearly accepted by mainstream progressives as a figure of note, and a legitimate authority on the subject of men, masculinity and feminism. (He was, after all, a college professor. He must know what he’s talking about!)
Having attended a division of the New School for Social Research in my youth and met several students of a similar intellectual and political bent — who often went on to become program directors, teachers, social workers, activists and authors — I’m not surprised. My experience has been that social justice cheerleaders, especially in the area of gender studies, have often been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. When they are manic, they can be extremely articulate thinkers and writers, but they also have some extreme emotional problems that undeniably influence their behavior and point of view. And because they waffle back and forth a lot emotionally, they also tend to be massive hypocrites who go from self-righteous progressive moralizing to hoovering lines of blow and giggling about “how stupid niggers are.”
If these tweets were really from Hugo, he’s admitted that he did it all for the nookie — and some desperately needed attention. He’s admitted that he “talked his way into teaching women’s studies” on the basis of two undergrad courses (his expertise is apparently in British medieval church history) and then “built a career as a well-known online male feminist.” He said he “read one book of Kimmel’s and made [himself] an expert on men and masculinity.” He’s said that he “kept mocking socially awkward men as creeps as a way of making [himself] look better.” He admitted to using his status as a male feminist sexually, even to have sex with a porn star. He ,”wrote an article in the Atlantic condemning age-disparate relationships the same week that [he] was sleeping with a 23 year-old. And sexting a 27 year-old.” He said that he “I loved being the most notorious bad boy male feminist out there,” and that he “cultivated that shit so hard.”
Men, this is what a male feminist’s brain looks like. As naked as Hugo’s dick pics that no one wants to see.
One wonders how much strange Jackson Katz is pulling in on the sly from his racket.
Next time some male feminist is passionately lecturing you on why you should “check your privilege,” take a moment to reflect on Hugo’s story.
Thanks, Hugo Schwyzer, for giving us a case study and a window into the mind of a male feminist.
And thanks for the line that’s sure to become an instant Twitter classic:
“I’ll be done soon, hang on. A few more minutes then I’ll take the Seroquil.”
And, in case you’re tempted to feel sorry for him, he’s made his career trashing other men with hits like:
- Why Women Are More Often Right
- Why Most Mass Murderers Are Privileged White Men
- Why The ‘End’ of White Men is Actually Good for White Men
- If You Want A More Thoughtful Boyfriend, Try Pegging Him (As in, with a dildo)
If anyone is deserving of your scorn, shame and derision — it’s this scumbag.
